STEP 1: WATCH amanda burden'S TED TALK
"More than 8 million people are crowded together to live in New York City. What makes it possible? In part, it’s the city’s great public spaces — from tiny pocket parks to long waterfront promenades — where people can stroll and play. Amanda Burden helped plan some of the city’s newest public spaces, drawing on her experience as, surprisingly, an animal behaviorist. She shares the unexpected challenges of planning parks people love — and why it's important." | |
STEP 2: SUMMARY
Write a summary of "How Public Spaces Make Cities Work" based on the criteria below; this should be a single paragraph. A summary should have both an introduction and conclusion sentence. The first sentence must include 1) the author's name, 2) the title of the text, and 3) the purpose/main point. In the body, be sure to give an outline of the entire text and some supporting detail. Do not use the first person "I" or include any reflections and/or evaluations. Close by reiterating the author's main point or purpose.
STEP 3: RESPONSE
Think of a public space, or any space (if you must), that draws you in and invites you to stay: a place you love to be in. This doesn't have to be a place in your own home town. You are welcome to think back on vacations, for example, or even to write about a place you have not yet visited but can imagine. Transitioning out of your summary paragraph, write a second paragraph that describes the space you love, referencing Burden's ideas to further prove your point that this is a wonderful space. Some have asked how long this should be. There is no formal word requirement, but an effective paragraph is most likely a minimum of five sentences. |
*Second Option: If you are feeling feisty, feel free to take this post in the opposite direction; instead of writing about a space you love, write about a space you dislike and explain why it doesn't work. You are also welcome to tackle both angles in your response paragraph as long as you work to provide detail and develop your ideas completely.
STEP 4: REVISE & EDIT
Please revise and edit your paragraphs carefully. Refer back to the comments you received for Blog 1 to ensure that your writing is improving each week.
STEP 5: WORKS CITED ENTRY
Create a formal MLA Works Cited entry for the source, and include this at the bottom of the blog post.
