It feels somewhat strange and forced to say it, but my name is Amber Lemiere. You may see me on my own most of the time, booking it from class to class, meeting to meeting, and one dream to the next, but do not be deceived. I'm the same as everyone else: deeply defined by, and first and foremost passionate about, my family. Let's start with the husband. Eric is an introverted musician with a great sense of humor and a pursuit for perfection as I have never seen before. He is the greatest source of growth and strength in my life, and we make the only team I'd ever want to be a part of. To complete our family unit, there's the dog-child. Harvard is a 120 pound, five year old, blue (thought it looks more like gray), Great Dane. No, I will not put a saddle on him, and to be clear, I am the one who is walking him.
Let's rewind, but not too far, to my post high school days when I was more interested in rock and roll than GPAs. Somehow, I wound up tutoring, discovered fulfillment in teaching and encouraging college learners, honed my major from Social Sciences to Rhetoric, earned a Master's degree in Rhetoric and the Teaching of Writing, and worked my way through a handful of jobs in this institution. In fact, I've worked at Lower Columbia College for eight years now, dreaming and scheming, for many of those years, in preparation for a life of teaching. Now that I find myself in that role, I'm trying to reclaim the interests that made up my life and identity before I buried my nose in the books.
Yes, I spend most of my time reading, grading, and working in general, but I also love to check out new restaurants, take a yoga class here and there, dance, sing, watch films, ride my bike, take Harvard for walks, play in the dirt (a.k.a garden), catch up with friends and family (preferably over coffee and/or breakfast), and find a quiet place to write in my journal. Oh, and I like to eat yellow vegetable curry over white rice. Do you know who I am, though? Words can only do so much justice when introducing the self. Perhaps the sounds of my life might give you a better clue, and so you'd like to know what I listen to when the lights are dimmed in my office and I need a beat to drive me through the lengthy to-do lists I daily face. Right now there's a YouTube playlist of the band M83 scrolling in the background. Imagine the Northern Lights, synthesizers, drum beats that crunch in a light and high-pitch sparkle, and the wispy wonder of both male and female voices as they extend over the swelling background. That's now, but another day or night it might be Radiohead, Sigur Ros, St. Lucia, The Killers, Muse, or Shiny Toy Guns. If you're ever up for talking music, I can get rather carried away.
That's who I am, though. I'm a carried away kind of person who believes in the power of words as a means for change, and who desires world change that is respective of all humanity, the animal kingdom, and the earth. I am fascinated by the idea that some of the most important events in history were initiated by words printed on a page, or delivered in a speech, or penned in a letter, or painted on a sign, and this is why I do what I do.
